World Cup 2026 Knockout Bracket
The 2026 World Cup knockout bracket starts with 32 teams in the round of 32 — more than any previous tournament. Understanding how teams are slotted into the bracket, and which matchups are determined by group results, is essential for building accurate predictions.
How the 32 teams are placed
The bracket is filled from three sources:
- 12 group winners — The first-place team from each of the twelve groups advances automatically. Group winners are generally seeded into the more favorable side of their bracket match.
- 12 runners-up — The second-place team from each group also advances automatically. Runners-up face a group winner from a different group, pre-assigned according to the official FIFA bracket table.
- 8 best third-place teams — The eight strongest third-place finishers complete the field. Each third-place bracket slot specifies which groups can supply the team for that position, so the assignment depends on which specific groups produced the advancing third-place teams.
Fixed bracket wiring
The bracket matchups are determined by a fixed assignment table published by FIFA before the tournament. This table specifies, for every round-of-32 match, exactly which group positions and which group letters are eligible for each slot.
This means a team's bracket path is determined the moment it finishes in a given group position. Winning Group A places a team in a specific round-of-32 match, which then has a predetermined route through the round of 16 and quarterfinals. Finishing second in Group A puts that team on a different branch of the draw, facing a different opponent in the round of 32.
Why finishing first versus second matters more in 2026
In the old 32-team, 8-group format, group winners faced runners-up from adjacent groups. The geometry was relatively predictable. With 12 groups, the fixed assignment table creates more varied pairings: the runner-up of one group might face the winner of a group from a completely different part of the draw.

The knockout rounds
After the round of 32, the bracket runs as standard single-elimination:
- Round of 32 — 16 matches, 32 → 16 teams
- Round of 16 — 8 matches, 16 → 8 teams
- Quarterfinals — 4 matches, 8 → 4 teams
- Semifinals — 2 matches, 4 → 2 teams
- Third-place match — The two semifinal losers
- Final — The two semifinal winners
There are no replays or extra group-phase rounds in the knockout stage. A single loss eliminates a team at every step, including the round of 32.
